5 Basic Web Analytics Terms You Should Know
1. Unique visitor: A person who visits a website more than once within a specified period of time. Unique visitors are tracked according to their unique IP address, which is like an online fingerprint, so they are counted only once no matter how many times they visit your site.
2. Page view: A webpage that has been viewed by one visitor.
3. Page hit: Also referred to as just a “hit,” this is a retrieval of any item – a page or a graphic – from a web server. So, if you visit a webpage with four graphics, that’s considered 5 hits. For this reason, “hits” often isn’t a good indication of web traffic.
4. Conversion: An action that signifies a completion of a specified activity on your website, such as buying a product or signing up for an ezine or downloading a file. Woo hoo!
5. Abandonment: When a visitor exits or leaves the conversion process on a website and does not return later in the session. Boo hiss.
