5 Tips for Avoiding Computer Eye Strain
1. Sit 18 to 30 inches (about two feet) from your computer monitor, which should be slightly below eye level. It's easier for eyes to focus downward than up.
2. Keep glare to a minimum. Try not to face toward windows or bright light sources, which can distract or confuse your focus. If possible, keep your brightest lights, including sunlight from a window, to the side, and position your screen so that light does not bounce directly onto it and into your eyes.
3. Take short frequent breaks, which are better than longer, less frequent ones. Try a 20-second break every 20 minutes or a 30-second break every 30 minutes. Just stare into another room or out the window, away from your computer screen.
4. Cover your eyes with your palms, and keep them in complete darkness for 30 seconds when they're beginning to feel a bit fatigued. You might even try rubbing your palms together before you do this to create a light heat sensation.
5. Have a comprehensive eye exam periodically. There are unique characteristics and high visual demands of computer work, which might require a prescription or, at the very least, the peace of mind that when it comes to good health, your eyes have it.
