1. b. When asked about the sale, White House press secretary Mike McCurry reportedly replied tongue-in-cheek that the Lincoln Memorial also had been sold and would henceforth be known as the “Lincoln Mercury Memorial.”
2. a. It ran in 2008.
3. a. The first letter of each word in the article subhead spelled out that the article was an April Fools’ Day joke.
4. c. Not only did customers order the new burgers, but some specifically requested the original, “right-handed” burger.
5. c. The program claimed that the spaghetti weevil, a despised pest, had been eradicated. A large number of people contacted the BBC wanting to know how to cultivate their own spaghetti trees.
6. d. Google perpetrated a, b, and c in 2005, 2006 and 2002, respectively.
7. a. Menino happened to be on a flight at the time, which lent credence to the prank because he could not be reached. The rumor spread quickly across the city, eventually causing news stations to issue alerts denying the hoax. The pair was fired shortly thereafter.
8. b. The picture actually was just one of a glass of water on a Mars candy bar.
9. a. They were supposedly two of the most difficult contestants ever!
10. d. The false mustache was a reference to the minor controversy that followed when he shaved his off in 2001. The fake was gone by the Double Jeopardy round.
